The crash happened in driving rain on a runway at Congonhas airport that had been criticized in the past for being too short. The TAM Airlines flight 3054 jet, after narrowly clearing the airport's perimeter fence and rush-hour traffic on a surrounding highway, slammed into a gas station and a cargo terminal where people were working. "What appears to have happened is that he (the pilot) didn't manage to land and he tried to take off again," said Capt. Marcos, a fire department spokesman. Rescue crews said none of the 176 people on board the Airbus A320 were likely to have survived. Brazilian news agency Folha quoted the leader of a rescue crew as saying there could be 200 people dead, including casualties on the ground. The plane, flying from Porto Alegre in southern Brazil , lost control on landing at Sao Paulo's Congonhas airport, which is known for slippery runways and has become a symbol of the country's chaotic air transport system. Pilots sometimes refer to Congonhas as the "aircraft carrier." They say they are instructed to touch down in the first 1,000 feet of runway, or do a go-around if they overshoot the immediate landing zone. President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva declared three days of national mourning following Brazil's second major air disaster in less than a year. Dozens of ambulances raced to the crash site, where the plane's tail hung out from the cargo terminal in flames as firefighters tried to put out the blaze, which spread to a neighboring building. Firefighters pulled at least 171 charred bodies from the site where the Airbus-320 crashed, igniting in a 1,830-degree fireball. They said they expected no survivors, which would make it the worst air disaster in Brazil's history. Three people in the building were found alive, but later died in hospital. Rescue teams found the plane's black box in the wreckage. It will be analyzed by Air Force specialists. Brazil's opposition leaders accused the country's Defence minister of "murder" after about 200 people died when an aircraft skidded off a runway with a record of safety problems. Pope Benedict XVI said Wednesday he was praying for the victims of the plane crash in Brazil and their relatives. The airline released a list of most of the people on the flight. "Tam expresses its most profound condolences to the relatives and friends of the passengers who were on Flight 3054." The Netherland's KLM crash in Tenerife is still the worse plane crash in history, but that doesn't say anything about the country itself.
