This was not a very big bolt. A moving car doesn't provide a significant ground and the high voltage charge travels on the outside instead of being conducted through the vehicle. Try this with a Delorian (stainless body no paint)sitting in a pool of water up to the rims and the outcome may be a little different.

Grounding the electricity has nothing to do with the rubber tires, it's the metal casing around the car that directs the electricity to the ground.

nope thats not the reason.. you're not 100% safe. its just that lightening travels on the surface of the vehicle like a live wide. if your hand is outside or window rolled down..you could be eletricuted. but 99% of the times you're safe.

Cool! It's like a drive-thru fireworks display! ...I though lightning was only 5 times hotter than the sun.

What are they scared about? You are 100% safe in a car during a thunderstorm.
